Music Therapy | Sessions
What happens in a typical music therapy session?
A single typical music therapy session is not realistic. Music therapists design sessions and select music specifically suited to an individual's treatment plan.
In a hospital setting, a music therapist adapts to the needs of several patients seen in sequence, usually on a single floor. Accompanied by a cart equipped with musical instruments, song books, and recorded music, a therapist travels from room to room, conducting therapy sessions varying in length from 15 to 60 minutes.
After assessing the patient and briefly discussing musical preference, intervention begins. A session may involve only the therapist providing music or of both therapist and patient (and often family or caregivers) making music together.
