Music Therapy Used To Help Healing Process
Healing Concert To Feature Violin Prodigy
San Diego—For patients at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, music therapy is a vital part of recovery. Music therapy can lower blood pressure and relax the body, 10News reported.
Ellen Bryson's pulse rate was 84 before she started music therapy. The drum beats brought her pulse down.
"My pulse rate dropped to 60— to the exact drum beat—which I thought was so amazing. It just goes to show you how it affects the body," Bryson said about music therapy.
Music therapist Barbara Reuer said the connection between music and the healing of the body, mind and spirit is powerful.
"Patients that have music imagery exercises before surgery don't have as much anesthesia and have less side effects post surgery," Reuer said.
Music therapy student T.K. Bryson said, "It relaxes you, reduces stress and it help you become more focused."
Ginny Shue believes strongly in music therapy as a path to healing.
"If I were going to do any surgery or something, I would definitely come here for the program and definitely have my music with me," Shue said.
The music therapy program is available to anyone. It's an ongoing 12-week course.
Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine is hosting a healing concert by San Diego violin prodigy Eugene Ugorski.
